Statement of Faith

Written Core Values ... below
SSV Statement of Faith

Core Beliefs

1. We believe the whole Bible to be completely and equally inspired and it is the written Word of God. The Church of God has adopted the following Declaration of Faith as its standard and official expression of its doctrine. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

2. We believe in one God eternally existing in three persons; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Matthew 3:16-17, Mark 1:10-10, Luke 21-22 and I John 5:1-11

.

3. We believe Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of the Father, conceived of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary.

Matthew 1:18-25 & 2:1-11, Luke1:26-56 & 2:1-15

4. We believe Jesus was crucified, buried, and raised from the dead.

Matthew 27-28, Mark 15-16, Luke 23-24 and John 19-20

5. We believe He ascended to heaven and is today at the right hand of the Father as the Intercessor (praying for us).

Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51, Acts 1:9-12, Hebrews 7:25

6. We believe all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and repentance is commanded of God for all and necessary for forgiveness of sins.

Romans 3:10-12 & 23. Psalms 14:1-3 & Psalm 53:1-3

7. We believe the only way to heaven, is through Faith in the physical life, death and bodily resurrection of Jesus and to declare Him Lord. This is taught, by Jesus; a person “Must be Born Again” (John 3:5).

Romans 10:9, 2 Corinthians 5:17

8. We believe when a person is Born-Again, Jesus sends the Holy Spirit into the believer and “Seals” their salvation.

John 20:22, Ephesians 1:12-14

9. We believe Holiness to be God’s standard of living for His people.

Leviticus 11:44, I Peter 15-16

However, many denominations and churches get side-tracked into “rules and regulations” and miss the guiding light of the Word in three (3) important points.

i. We are Saved by Faith, not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9). We have no room to boast in our salvation that was freely given to us.

ii. We are God’s “Masterpiece” in being a New Creation. Because we are saved we have the ability to DO GOOD Works (Ephesians 2:10).

iii. Even when we try to do good, we still miss the mark and fail to live holy. But, the Lord knows our failings and tells us to “confess our sins, He (Jesus) is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9).

10. We believe there is a/are subsequent In-Fillings of the Holy Spirit where the Spirit endows believers with Gifts for ministry and empowerment.

This is evident in Acts 2 when the believers in the upper-room were filled and spoke in Tongues along with many other gifts present at the time.

The Church at Jerusalem was subsequently “Filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31).

In Acts 8, Philip went to Samaria and preached where they were saved and baptized in water. However, when Peter and John came, they learned they had NOT been filled with the Holy Spirit. They prayed for them and they were filled and the evidence was seen (v 17-18).

When Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:17-18) after Ananias prayed for him, he was healed and regained his eyesight and Paul later testified, “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all” (I Corinthians 14:18).

When the Gentiles first heard the Gospel as Peter preached in the house of Cornelius it says, “the Holy Spirit fell on all them … for they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God” (Acts 10:44-46).

There are heated debates about the gift of “Tongues” and speaking in foreign languages. However, if you study closely the teaching of Paul (I Corinthians 13:6-25) you’ll see there is a distinct difference.

11. Divine healing is provided for in the Punishment of Jesus.

The number of scriptures advancing and affirming bodily healing are numerous. Even the Greek word for Saved (Sozo) means to heal.

Isaiah (53:5) the prophet describes the suffering of Jesus, “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.”

Peter reiterates (I Peter 2:24), “Who His own self bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness; by whose stripes you were healed.”

James, the half brother of Jesus explicitly tells us, “Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save them who are sick… pray one for another, that you will be healed” (James 5:14-16).

For the skeptic… I can’t heal. You can’t heal. Jesus HEALS. We are COMMANDED to Pray for healing.

Four (4) Ordinances

Within our Statement of Faith there are four (4) Ordinances of the Church..

12. (1) We believe in the Lord’s Supper … Communion.

We celebrating the Lord's Supper (Communion) regularly in remembrance of His covenant with us in partake of the Jesus's Blood (Wine) and His broke body (Bread) until Jesus' return. [I Corinthians 11:23-30].

Passover is still important to the Lord. It is an everlasting ordinance according to Exodus 27:21. Jesus confirmed that we would celebrate the Lord’s Supper (Passover) in every remembrance of Him [Matthew 26:26, Luke 22:19, I Corinthians 11:24].

13. (2) We believe in water baptism by immersion, and all who repent should be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 3:16-17, Mark 1:10-10, Luke 21-22 and I John 5:1-11, I Colossians 2:12.

Even though, as a young man, Saint Augustine was the first proponent of “Miracles ceased with the Apostles” he later recanted and admitted that miracles, including Tongues, were present when converts emerged from Water Baptism plunge. (See City of God, Miracles)

14. (3) We believe in the washing of the saints’ feet.

John 13:3-10, Mark 14:3 and Matthew 26:7-13

In some ways I believe this may be the most holy of all of the ordinances of the church.

It does teach us three (3) lessons.

i. We should quite literally wash the feet of those we admire in the faith and hope to serve.

ii. In surrendered giving we should sacrificially give to the Lord… not to a man. Find the ministry deserving the “Alabaster Box” and your tears of humility to help. [Caution: This is not a request for a donation.]

iii. The “Washing of Feet” can be an analogy to helping ANY Saint (believer) in need. Keep your spiritual eyes open.

15. (4) Marriage is God’s sanctification of the family. It is to be between ONE Man and ONE Woman. It has been this way since God created them and put them in the Garden.

“God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

“For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife; and they will become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24)

16. We believe in the Resurrection from the Dead and pre-wrath, premillennial catching away (Rapture) of the believers.

I Thessalonians 4:15-17, I Thessalonians 5:9, Revelation 15:7 & 8.

17. We believe in the premillennial second coming of Jesus and His reign on earth for 1,000 years.

John testifies of this in Revelation 19:11 & 20:4.

18. In the bodily resurrection; eternal life for the righteous, and eternal punishment for the wicked.

Revelation 20:12-15

19. We there is going to be a New Heaven and Earth…New Jerusalem

Revelation 21:1-4, Hebrews 1:11-12
